Killeagh

"Killeagh," Kingfishr’s B-side released with “Bet On Beauty” in December 2024, became an unexpected hit. Its popularity surged due to TikTok videos featuring its chorus and green imagery around St. Patrick’s Day. Since then the song has spent 18 weeks in Ireland’s Top 10, achieved four-times platinum status, and was the first soulful, folk-leaning song to reach such heights since The Fields of Athenry in the early 1980s.

The song originated when Eoin “Fitz” Fitzgibbon, the band’s bassist and a native of Killeagh—a small East Cork village with a strong GAA culture—was challenged by his former coach. After Killeagh’s junior hurling team surprisingly made it to an East Cork final for the first time since 2001, the coach told Fitz “All the other teams have a song—why don’t you write one for Killeagh?”

Within 20 minutes in the studio, the lads of Kingfishr had risen to the challenge with lyrics that folded in local spots such as Glenbower Woods and a singable melody that feels timeless.

While "Killeagh" was written to celebrate local pride, the song has quickly transcended its origins, becoming an anthem not only for Killeagh but also an unofficial anthem for Cork, and a symbol of GAA culture across Ireland and globally.
