Grace was written by Frank and Seán O'Meara and tells the true Irish love story between Joseph Mary Plunkett and Grace Gifford.
The Easter Rising, which began on April 24, 1916, was an armed insurrection against British rule, led by the Irish Republican Brotherhood and other nationalist groups. The uprising aimed to establish an independent Irish Republic while Britain was deeply engaged in World War I. After a week of intense fighting, the British forces crushed the rebellion, leading to the surrender of its leaders, including Plunkett.
Joseph Mary Plunkett, a poet and scholar, played a critical role in planning the Rising, despite suffering from severe health issues, including tuberculosis. Following the uprising's failure, he and other leaders were court-martialed and sentenced to death. On May 3, 1916, in Kilmainham Gaol, Plunkett married Grace Gifford in a brief ceremony under the watchful eyes of guards. Just hours later, Plunkett was executed by firing squad, leaving Grace a widow.
The Easter Rising is profoundly significant to the Irish people as a turning point in the struggle for independence.
